- W1997841105 abstract "Abstract The temperature dependences of 19 F-NMR and 119 Sn-Mǒssbauer spectra of second-stage CxSnFy have previously been measured. At room temperature, a single sharp peak is observed for 19 F-NMR, suggesting a rapid exchange of the fluorine ligands. The peak barely broadens as the temperature is lowered to 173 K. It, however, broadens drastically in the temperature range 172 – 133 K. The 119 Sn-Mǒssbauer data show similar results. At room temperature a singlet is observed. A sizable broadening occurs with decreasing temperature, and between 160 K and 140 K a doublet appears owing to a strong quadrupole splitting. These results suggest a two-dimensional phase transition of the guest species. In order to shed some more light on the phenomenon, we have measured the temperature dependence of the repeat distance of stage-2 CxSnFy. The samples were prepared using HOPG in an SnF 4 -saturated solution of AHF with fluorine gas being bubbled. The d-spacing of (006) reflection was measured in the temperature range of 298–78 K. The results show that d oce (⋍1.9 A) increases as the temperature is raised in the ranges 78–123 K and 143–298 K, but that it contracts ca. 0.01 Adiscontinuously in the range 123–143 K. It corresponds to a ca. 0.05 A-contraction in the apparent thickness of the guest species. Although the contraction, instead of expansion, was unexpected, the temperature range at which this contraction occurs is in accord with those of the peak feature changes in 19 F-NMR and 119 Sn-Mǒssbauer spectra. The observed contraction, therefore, is likely to be associated with the two-dimensional phase transition of the guest species. Though highly speculative, an ice-water like transition might be the case. DSC measurements are in progress." @default.
