• W1997967196 abstract "ABSTRACT An experiment was carried out to investigate whether failure in inter‐ or intra‐modality integration is responsible for the high number of reversal errors in beginning and retarded readers. Twelve beginning readers, 12 retarded readers, 12 dyslexic readers and 12 normal readers carried out four search tasks, which involved matching an auditory stimulus to an auditory target (A‐A), a visual stimulus to a visual target (V‐V), an auditory stimulus to a visual target (A‐V) and a visual stimulus to an auditory target (V‐A). The results indicated that the beginning readers made more errors on the V‐V task, the retarded readers made errors on all the tasks, the dyslexic readers made more errors on the A‐V and V‐A tasks and the normal readers made almost no errors at all. The results are interpreted as partial support for Birch & Belmont's (196Sa,b) hypothesis that failure in inter‐modality integration is a major cause of reading failure." @default.
