- W1998358801 abstract "Lead isotope ratios, together with uraninm and lead analyses, are reported for Lower Tertiary (ca. 55–60 m.y.) igneous rocks from Skye. Rocks analysed include uhrabasic, basic, intermediate and acid types. The leads from all these rocks are isotopically anomalous (“B”-type) when interpreted by a conventional single stage lead evolution model. All the leads fall on an anomalons 206Pb/204Pb versus 207Pb/204Pb lead line, which cuts a conventional growth curve (with 238U/204Pb = 8.92) at t1 = 3100 m.y. and t2 = 60 m.y. Each lead is therefore regarded as a mixture of ancient, crustal lead, derived from the underlying Lewisian basement rocks, with relatively young, upper mantle lead. The proportion and absolute amount of each type of lead within a given rock may be calculated from the anomalous lead line, when taken in conjunction with other isotopic and geochemical data. Analogous calculations are also possible on the basis of the observed 208Pb/204Pb ratios. In general, the acid rocks contain much larger absolute amounts of crustal lead than one basic and ultrabasic ones. Uranium and lead contents, as well as uranium/lead ratios in the Skye acid igneous rocks are found to be much closer to the values for average Lewisian basement gneisses in the vicinity of Skye than to the values for acid igaeous rocks of a truly oceanic area such as Iceland. The percentage of ancient, crustal lead in the Skye rocks (between ca. 10–80%) cannot possibly represent the same percentage of bulk contamination with, or assimflation of, country rock. Whilst the basic and ultrabasie rocks have been probably contaminated with small absolute amounts of ancient crustal lead, the most likely mechanism to account for the origin of the acid rocks, taking all available evidence into account, is a combination of partial melting of the underlying Lewisian gneisses with differentiation of a smaller amount of acid material from the large basic masses which underlie the Skye acid igneous centres, followed by localised hybridisation of pockets of anateotic and differentiated acid magmas and localised isotopic homogenisation." @default.
