- W1998394920 abstract "Abstract 28 patients (49 feet) aged between 9 and 69 who had a modified McBride procedure for hallux valgus have been studied. Each patient was interviewed and examined by the same assessor using criteria recommended by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. The follow-up period ranged from 15 months to 15 years (mean 6 years). 71% had good or excellent results. 92% were satisfied with the outcome of their surgery and only 8% had poor results. The degree of hallux valgus averaged 30.7° preoperatively and 13.5% postoperatively. The intermetatarsal angle averaged 13° preoperatively and 8.3° postoperatively. Symptomatic improvement showed 41% with severe pain preoperatively compared with 4% with no pain postoperatively. Shoe wear tolerance increased from 84% who had problems with shoes to 70% with no problems postoperatively. There was no significant difference between those aged below 30 years and those over 30 years at the time of operation. The procedure has traditionally been reserved for those under the age of 30. We believe that age is not a criterion for the selection of patients for this procedure." @default.
