Each system grows epitaxially in the ultrathin regime and exhibits the universal behavior of perpendicular ferromagnetic spin orientations below a critical thickness of 6 monolayers or less. The systems differ, however, in their monolayer-dosage magnetic properties due to interdiffusion and hybridization at the interface. Fe/Pd(1 0 0) exhibits submonolayer magnetism, while <2-monolayers Fe/Ru(0 0 0 1) lacks a ferromagnetic signature, in accord with expectations based on moment formation in dilute Fe alloys." @default.
