- W1998466327 abstract "This article explores the extent to which land (mapu) continues to function as a central ethnic marker in the identity formation of Mapuche youth in Chile. Given its historical importance to the very meaning of being Mapuche and contemporary demands for land recuperation, I examine the ways in which land is used by the indigenous youth to define themselves in relation to non-Mapuche others. Chilean media and politicized discourses can present overly static and romanticized depictions of indigenous territories, which fail to adequately describe the life experiences of many of their inhabitants. Research conducted among pupils in secondary schools in the ninth region of Chile compliments these representations of indigenous lands by revealing how articulations from everyday practices result in alternate ways of conceptualizing and experiencing ethnic identity. The article explores categories of belonging; expectations regarding employment, migration, and prospering; spirituality; re-spatialization; and social change." @default.
