- W1998479567 abstract "Abstract A vertical flow reactor was designed and built to correlate the destruction of polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins (PCDDs) in the homogeneous gas phase using the three independent incineration parameters: temperature (600–1000°C), residence time (0.5-2.0 seconds), and oxygen concentration (0.5–21%). The PCDD samples were prepared by rinsing and drying 5 grams of sand with 1 microgram of C131,2,3,4-TCDD and 1 microgram of C13OCDD in toluene and introduced into the gas phase by heating the sand particles to 300°C in a pre-heating oven. Reaction products were trapped in the gas phase with an XAD-2 filter and in the solid phase by collecting the condensate and rinsing the water jacket with acetone and toluene. Both the XAD-2 filter and the diluent were combined to form a single, high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectometry (HRGC/HRMS) analysis. Both PCDD isomers were completely destroyed at a temperature of 950°C, a residence time of 1.0 second, and an oxygen concentration no greater than 7%. Significant quantities of PCDDs survived 950°C when the oxygen concentration was between 10–21%. Strong interactions were observed between all three independent variables and was most pronounced at 600°C. No dechlorinated PCDDs nor any other combustion products were detected in any of the analyses due to the excessively high temperature and long residence time." @default.
