- W1998607812 abstract "A study was made of some chemical constituents and of maltase, leucine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase in the mucosa and epithelial cell brush borders of normal rat jejuna and of jejuna parasitized by the nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. At the peak of infection (10 days) the dry weight of diseased jejunal mucosa increased by 67%, water content by 13%, and epithelial cell numbers by about 25%. Hyperplasia of the villi was associated with a proportional increase in DNA, total N, and anthrone-sensitive carbohydrates, and with a greater increase in RNA and phospholipids. In the brush borders, hexosamines (mucopolysaccharides) decreased by 26%, whereas total N, total lipids and phospholipids were unchanged. There also appeared to be less brush border per epithelial cell. Pancreatic secretion of amylase and trypsin was unaffected, although these enzymes were considerably diluted by the abnormal volume of fluid in the diseased jejunum. Intestinal contents of actively digesting rats contained insignificant amounts of maltase and LAP-ase, which, like alkaline phosphatase, were firmly bound in the brush borders. Infection reduced the concentration of these three enzymes by 75%, and their total amount by 50%. Maltase activity in the mucosa of the unparasitized distal ileum of infected rats was reduced by 32%.Although most parasites were eliminated from the intestine within 21 days, mucosal solids remained at the elevated 10-day level and maltase activity was still depressed. In 5-day infections solids were already increased by 42%, whereas maltase activity was almost normal. All experimental evidence failed to support the hypothesis that N. brasiliensis contained or secreted inhibitors of digestive enzymes. The results in general were consistent with the view that in intestinal disease different etiological agents may produce similar anatomical and physiological responses." @default.
