- W1998902743 abstract "Two experiments were conducted to examine the role of frameworks in children's memory for sex-related story information. In both experiments, 48 fifth graders (10-year-olds) read two stories about boy and girl characters who displayed an equal number of masculine and feminine characteristics. Attempts were made to activate frameworks for processing story information by providing character descriptions that were congruent or incongruent with societal sex role stereotypes. In Experiment 1, advance presentation of sex role-congruent and incongruent character descriptions produced selective memory for content consistent with each description. Moreover, sex-stereotypic descriptions biased memory more than descriptions conflicting with stereotypic beliefs. To determine whether frameworks have their major influence on the encoding or retrieval process, Experiment 2 presented subjects with character descriptions after the stories. Subjects displayed superior memory for sex-stereotypic content regardless of description type, indicating that frameworks affected encoding more than retrieval. The implications of this research for improving children's reading comprehension were discussed." @default.
