- W1998930112 abstract "A large portion of the Yellow Sea is floored by fine-grained clastics derived largely from the Hwangho and Yangtze rivers. Coarse-grained sediments only prevail in the eastern part of the sea, derived probably from the short and steep Korean rivers. Near the Keum Estuary the coarse-grained sediments contain substantial amounts of fine fractions. Detrital clays such as kaolinite and chlorite are abundant in the fine fractions and this trend extends for about 120 km both toward the northwest and the southwest. The distributions of some trace elements in the bulk sediments also follow the same trend. The close correspondence between mineralogical and geochemical evidence and hydrographic data suggests that the bulk of fine-grained sediments in the southeastern Yellow Sea originates from the Keum River and is subsequently transported by prevailing nearshore currents both northwestward during summer and dominantly southwestward in winter. Illite is dominant in the rest (south of 35° N) of the sea, influenced by the discharge of Hwangho River and possibly Yangtze River. The effect of the Kuroshio in transporting illite into the southeastern Yellow Sea appears to be minimal." @default.
