- W1999191569 abstract "Abstract Enclosed seas provide unique opportunities for studying marine ecological relationships and mechanisms. Moreover, these basins are the site of countless economic and recreational activities, with the consequence of being threatened by dramatic dangers of misuse and pollution. The Mediterranean region, and the Black Sea in particular, can be taken as the ultimate representative of environmentally stressed enclosed seas. Adequate tools are needed to study the environmental pressure imposed on these seas, in order to balance the conflicting needs of exploiting their natural resources and protecting their ecological balance. Optical remote sensing can provide a novel look at marine bio‐geo‐chemical and physical processes and their driving mechanisms. The CZCS experiment (1978–1986) generated a unique time series of data on the surface colour field of the world seas. The OCEAN Project was set up to promote the use of these historical data in studies of the European marginal and enclosed basins. Preliminary data sets generated by the Project illustrate the relationship between ocean colour and water constituents, e.g. in the Black Sea, as well as the contribution that optical observation systems can give to the monitoring of environmental conditions. The main feature of the Black Sea appearing in CZCS data is the higher pigment concentration with respect to the other basins of the Mediterranean region. The impact on the surface colour field of river discharges, from the Danube, Dnestr and Dnepr in particular, along the western coast (both a direct effect due to the sediment load and one induced on the planktonic flora by the nutrient load) can be readily evaluated from the CZCS images. The resulting coastal‐type waters appear to be entrained in the surface circulation pattern of the Black Sea, tracing a number of mesoscale features in both the western and the eastern sub‐basins. A plume of high pigment waters extending from the Bosphorus seems to trace the Black Sea outflow into the Sea of Marmara. This preliminary work will constitute the basis for the exploitation of new data from future ocean colour space missions (SeaWiFS, MERIS) as they become available in Europe through the OCTOPUS Programme." @default.
