- W1999234966 abstract "Summary Crustaceans do not synthesize carotenoid pigments but ingest them from their plant food. Eggs of different crustaceans accumulate carotenoids in large quantities, but their metabolism d uring embryonic development has received only scant attention. This paper reports on the qualitative and quantitative changes in the carotenoids during egg development of the mole crab, Emerita asiatica, using spectrophotometry in conjunction with column and thin layer chromatography. In the freshly laid eggs, β-carotene predominates over the other carotenoids, the concentration exceeding over 15.56 μg/g wet weight. In the succeeding stages of development, β-carotene shows a steady decline. Several intermediate compounds in the biosynthetic pathway of β-carotene have been identified and quantified during the course of embryonic development. They are: isocryptoxanthin, echinenone, isozeaxanthin, zeaxanthin, and canthaxanthin. Astaxanthin is the final metabolic conversion product of β-carotene. In the zoea larvae, mo..." @default.
