- W1999335080 abstract "The Baringo District, Kenya, is a severely degraded semi-arid region where erodible soils with low organic contents and poor physical properties contribute to extreme erosion rates. Increases in soil organic contents are difficult to achieve by orthodox land use practices for both social and ecological reasons. This paper reports initial laboratory experiments carried out to evaluate the potential of certain soil conditioner treatments for improvement of soil physical properties and short term alleviation of soil erosion. Experiments involved ten soil samples from the Baringo District treated with SEPARAN AP30, ELVANOL 71-30, SUPERFLOC N300, P-26 and NORBAK at various concentrations. Most treatments produced some beneficial effects, but wet-sieve screening showed the most promising results with SEPARAN AP30 applied at 0.05% concentration. Subsequent tests showed useful and significant improvements in liquid and plastic limits, saturated hydraulic conductivity, moisture retention and crusting resistance for most soil samples, even with treatment concentrations as low as 0.025%. A third set of tests, in which samples were subjected to simulated rainfall and sunshine cycles designed to replicate weathering conditions in Baringo, showed that improvements in physical conditions produced by conditioner treatment could be sustained over weathering periods equivalent to several months.
