- W1999404104 abstract "In a series of multidisciplinary studies, the authors investigated automatic stages of emotion processing in major depression by means of neuropsychological paradigms, neuroimaging (fMRI), and the imaging genetics approach. All studies made use of backward-masked presentations of emotional faces which successfully prevented the subjects from consciously perceiving the emotional stimuli. In a first longitudinal study, we demonstrated that depressed patients show negatively biased automatic evaluative processes using a masked affective priming task. The degree of automatic evaluative bias was associated with poor treatment response (Dannlowski et al., 2006). In a second study, we investigated the neurobiological underpinnings of this automatic evaluative bias by means of fMRI in a sample of healthy volunteers. We found a strong and specific correlation of amygdala responsiveness to masked negative faces with automatic negative evaluative bias in the affective priming task (Dannlowski et al., 2007a). A third study replicated these findings in a larger sample of depressed patients. Furthermore, automatic negative evaluative bias was strongly associated with a longer and severer history of depression (Dannlowski et al., 2007b). In a final study, it was demonstrated that amygdala reactivity to masked facial emotions was modulated by a genetic variation (5-HTTLPR) in the serotonergic system. Healthy as well as depressed carriers of risk alleles (S and LG) showed increased amygdala responsiveness to the masked emotional face stimuli (Dannlowski et al., 2008). We conclude that the amygdala plays a pivotal role in automatic evaluative responses. A probably genetically influenced amygdala hyper-reactivity might affect the onset and maintenance of depression by eliciting dysfunctional negative biases already at automatic stages of emotion processing." @default.
