- W1999493603 abstract "Dementia occurs in 10% of individuals over 65 years of age and requires the examination of brain tissues for definitive diagnosis. The pathological assessment of dementia requires knowledge of clinical history, adequate silver stains of brain tissue, and accurate interpretation of clinicopathological data that distinguishes normal aging from neurodegenerative disorders. Silver stains can be expensive, time consuming, and frustrating for histotechnology staff. Reliable, high quality silver preparations require meticulous attention to detail, scrupulous preparation of reagents, and dedication by the histopathology staff to the preparation of high quality specimens. The definitive diagnosis of dementia is highly valued by family caregivers because of the disease's devastating clinical symptoms and potential genetic causes. The demand for diagnostic neuropathology of neurodegenerative disorders will expand over the next 2 decades and high quality histopathology will assume increasing importance in this field.
