- W1999532490 abstract "Thirty-eight Valdostana Red Pied (VRP) heifers were raised in three separate groups: the first on a medium (M, n=14) and the second on a high (H, n=14) feeding plane during the peripubertal phase, for a first calving at 2 years of age; the third group following a traditional management system which foresees a first calving at 3 years of age (T, n=10). At the start of the feeding trial, the groups for the early calving differed in age and body weight (BW): 174 vs. 125 days and 150 vs. 111 kg for M and H, respectively. During the treatment period (210 days), average daily gain was 0.538 vs. 0.748 kg for M and H groups (P<0.001); at the end, BW, wither height and hearth girth did not differ. During the post-treatment period (154 days), M heifers showed a compensatory growth. The two groups attained puberty at the same age of about 10 months. At calving, heifers of M and H groups were about 2 years old, while those of T group were about 3 years old. All heifers calved in autumn 1998. The main results were (mean for M, H and T, respectively): 356, 357 and 403 kg of BW at calving; 27.6, 29.2 and 32.0 kg of calf birth weight; 2533, 2433 and 3037 kg of 305-day milk production; 85.6, 88.1 and 103.1 kg of milk fat production; 82.6, 81.6 and 98.9 kg of milk protein production. There were no significant differences between M and H in first calving and first lactation performance. Contrasts between M and H vs. T were significant in BW at calving (P=0.006), calf birth weight (P=0.02) and milk production (P=0.05). The difference in daily gain around pubertal phase between M and H seemed not to impair lactation performance. The goal of obtaining a first calving at an age around 2 years seemed technically obtainable in VRP breed for both the considered feeding planes; however, the comparison with the traditional management system gave a better result for T." @default.
