- W1999803923 abstract "The conduction-electron spin susceptibility ${ensuremath{chi}}_{P}$ for Li and Na was measured as a function of pressure. By combining the present data with the previously measured volume dependence of the Knight shift of these metals, the volume dependence of the amplitude of the electron wave functions at the nucleus, ${P}_{F}(V)$ is deduced for the first time. A comparison with theoretical predictions of ${P}_{F}(V)$ for Na indicates that they all agree qualitatively and some agree numerically with the experimentally obtained results. None of the theories, however, correctly predict the experimental results for Li. The Pauli susceptibility enhancement $frac{{ensuremath{chi}}_{P}}{{ensuremath{chi}}_{F}}$ for a jellium model has been a favorite topic among many-body theoreticians. (Here ${ensuremath{chi}}_{F}$ is the free-electron gas susceptibility.) Dozens of theories of $frac{{ensuremath{chi}}_{P}}{{ensuremath{chi}}_{F}}$ as a function of the Wigner-Seitz radius ${r}_{S}$ have been published since 1929. The attempts to compare the theories with experiments made one realize that an important link was missing; the effect of the band structure in real metals on the many-body enhanced susceptibility was not known. The present data for $frac{{ensuremath{chi}}_{P}}{{ensuremath{chi}}_{F}}$ and $frac{d(frac{{ensuremath{chi}}_{P}}{{ensuremath{chi}}_{F}})}{d{r}_{S}}$ for Li support the validity of the newly developed general theory of susceptibility by Vosko and Perdew which incorporates the band-structure effect in a logical way rather than in an ad hoc fashion. The perfect agreement between the present data and their calculation of $frac{{ensuremath{chi}}_{P}}{{ensuremath{chi}}_{F}}$ and its derivative for Na strongly supports some of the jellium theories previously proposed." @default.
