Abstract The absorption-rich optical and near-infrared spectrum of the quasi-stellar object 1331 + 170 is analyzed. The emission-line redshift is z 2.08, and at least three absorption systems are shown to be present; the absorption redshifts are ZA = 1.7755, z0 = 1.7851 and Zc = 1.9637. The spectrum contains evidence of line locking both between absorption system A and the emission lines and between the absorption lines of systems A and B. We conclude that the absorbing material giving rise to systems A, B, and C is intrinsic to the QSO despite the high velocity difference between emission and absorption systems ( 0.1 c) and the low velocity dispersion within each absorption system (%< 300 km s-1) The line locking suggests that radiation pressure in resonance lines may be responsible for the outflow.
