• W200013268 abstract "ABSTRACT This paper, written in tutorial style, describes a form of knowledge representation and inference suitable for the design of Expert Systems. It is based on a theory of Support Logic Programming which uses support pairs to model various forms of uncertainty, including those of a probabilistic and fuzzy nature. Uhat constitutes an Expert System is first discussed before providing a more detailed look at a possible form of knowledge representation and inference under uncertainty suitable for many application domains. Knowledge representation is in the form of facts and rules of a prolog style. Support pairs are associated with each fact and rule providing support measures for them. Facts not in the knowledge base are assumed to be uncertain so that a closed world assumnticn is not used. Something which is known to be false can be so represented by suitable choice of the support pair associated with it. Evidence is central to all branches of knowledge engineering. An inquiry seeks evidence to support a given hypothesis or choose between several possible decisions or decide on what plan of action to take. The data collected to provide the information for this evidence is often necessarily vague. The vagueness may be of a statistical nature or contain not well defined linguistic terms. This imprecision also applies to the specification of what constitutes a good decision or plan and also to the background knowledge of rules, laws, and facts used in conjunction with the evidence in drawing conclusions. The same conclusion may be drawn using different sources of evidence and background knowledge but with varying supports. How are these supports to be combined? Furthermore, one evidence nay point in favour while another against a given decision establishing a form of conflict. How is this conflict to be resolved? Support Logic Progragmming provides a means to provide answers to these questions provided certain assumptions are satisfied." @default.
