It compares the films' treatments of their subjects' personae and suggests that they are examples of the contradictory cultural status of the singer-songwriter in the post-folk revival era. It also argues that these men's alienation from their own fame may have been particularly intense because they are Canadians whose careers were initially made in the US music industry during the height of the mid-1960s counter-culture.
