- W2000209717 abstract "American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics 1 In the analysis of trailing vortex’s behavior with time, a fully rolled-up vortex pair, represented by Rankine’s vortex, is used as a basic, starting-point vortex model. However, it is hard to predict the basic structure, specifically the core size that determines the maximum swirl velocity. Also, analytical and experimental data reported to date show a wide variety of the vortex core size. The present paper proposes a simple, hypothetical vortex model that uniquely determines the trailing-vortex core size. It was developed by reviewing the classical lifting-line theory as well as the trailing-vortex rolling-up process, thereby considering the conservation laws. The present analytical results show that the free-vortex core size is independent of the aspect ratio for arbitrarily loaded wings. Also, sample calculations for representative commercial transport with elliptically loaded wings show that the core size increases as the aircraft becomes heavier while the maximum swirl velocity is practically unchanged." @default.
