- W2000219660 abstract "This paper briefly describes the findings and new directions from research conducted at Stanford University that seeks to understand the emergence of gender differences during adolescence in depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, which are collectively referred to as internalizing disorders. This program of research arose from an observed and general association between puberty and the emergence of gender differences in internalizing symptoms. More recently the effort has been to identify specific aspects of puberty (biological and psychosocial) that might confer a differential sensitivity to the development of internalizing problems in particular girls during puberty. Pubertal timing, hormonal changes, ethnicity, current or past victimization, and types of peer involvement are possible relevant factors; although no one factor alone is likely to account for the increased incidence of internalizing disorders in girls during early adolescence. Finally, it is argued that a more developmental understanding of the relationships among these factors and others is needed, fitting a developmental psychopathology framework and linking various theoretical perspectives together." @default.
