- W2000229104 abstract "Reflecting on Freud's approach to mourning and melancholia, the author first distinguishes grief from depression. He then suggests a three-dimensional schema involving the intensity, duration, and type of loss involved in the grieving process. Attending to the highly variable nature of this process, he describes grieving or mourning labor as the organism's natural healing process whereby the loss is acknowledged and the organism is made ready to go on with life, unaccompanied by that which was let go. The role of the therapist is seen as one of facilitating the natural individualized process of grieving. Help is most appropriate when the client is unable to grieve or has been grieving too long. In the first case the client is seen as refusing to enter into the experience of the labor of mourning and in the latter as refusing to finish the work. The article concludes with a description of the empty-chair monologue in which the client is encouraged to do the mourning labor of expressing appreciations, resentments, and regrets while the therapist attends to any inadequacy of awareness, of arousal, or of crying activity." @default.
