- W2000254102 abstract "This paper reexamines Singer and Small's (1968) finding that the direction of the relationship between interaction opportunities and war behavior differs by century. New indicators for the independent and dependent variables are introduced and examined for three time periods (1816–1914,1919–1939, and 1946–1965) utilizing OLS/GLS techniques. At a great power level of analysis, no significant relationships emerge for the 1816–1914 period. The findings for the 1919–1939 and 1946–1965 periods contradict one another thereby weakening the “turn of the century” interpretation advanced in 1968. However, a closer examination of the post‐1918 data indicates that the signs and strengths of the 1919–1939 and 1946–1965 relationships are heavily dependent on restricted variance, the subsequent sensitivity of the analysis to a few outlying data points, and the imposition of a lag order. These analytical problems suggest that the limited support for the interaction opportunity/ war behavior relationship which is uncovered in the 1919–1939 period should be viewed with great caution." @default.
