- W2000268316 abstract "Abstract The electrokinetic properties of several types of Ferralsols in China were investigated using microelectrophoresis. The four main types of Ferralsols, namely, latosol, latored soil (latosolic red soil), red soil, and yellow soil, showed marked differences in their electrokinetic properties, with the greatest variability in the latosol and the smallest in the yellow soil. Over the pH range of 2–8, the zeta potentials of the soils were in the order latosol > latored soil > red soil > yellow soil, and their isoelectric point (IEP) values were 5.79, 4.71, 2.74, and 2.35, respectively. Ferralsols of the same type but from other regions, Brasilia (Brazil), Hainan (China) and Hawaii (USA), also showed substantial electrokinetic differences. The relationship between the electrokinetic properties of the yellow soils and red soils and their parent materials was complex. Significant electrokinetic differences were found between a pair of latored soils, a reddish soil on a south-facing slope and a yellowish soil on a north-facing slope, respectively, and between two latosols also with different colors located in neighboring areas. Some electrokinetic differences were found between three samples from different horizons in a latosol profile, particularly in the low pH range. For twelve Ferralsol samples, covering all the soil types, good correlations were found between the IEP value and Fe2O3 (%) ( R=0.812 ∗∗ ), the Al (Al+Si) ratio ( R=0.858 ∗∗ ), and the ( Al+Fe) (Al+Fe+Si) ratio ( R=0.910 ∗∗ ). Moreover, the IEP-pHKCI, value correlated well with the (Al+Fe) (Al+Fe+Si) ratio ( R=0.886 ∗∗ ). The relationship between pedogenic development and electrokinetic properties of Ferralsols is discussed. We suggest that electrokinetic properties as expressed by the IEP, IEP-pHKC,, and zeta potential values could be used as reference criteria for classification of Ferralsols." @default.
