- W2000280608 abstract "Oil spills are a frequent contamination source in vast land areas, including crop fields, causing great damages to the ecology and the economy of rural regions. Thus, the development of technologies aimed to remediate oil contamination is required. Therefore, in the present study, the effects of nutrients supplementation and addition of common crop residues (CR), to biostimulate autochthonous microflora for hydrocarbons-biodegradation, were investigated in microcosms containing soil spiked with diesel (40 g kg−1). A 24-1 fractional factorial design was used to evaluate the effects of C:N ratio (100:10 or 100:30), moisture content (20% or 30%, w/w), CR amount (2% or 3%, w/w) and CR type (corn or sugar cane) on diesel removal. Microcosms containing a 100:10 C:N ratio, 30% moisture and 3% corn residue (C-CR) showed the highest metabolic activity, increasing CO2 production 7.7-fold. Also, microorganism growth, both heterotrophic and hydrocarbon-degrading populations, and diesel removal were increased by 67%. A positive relationship was observed between diesel hydrocarbon degradation, C-CR presence and soil autochthonous microorganism biostimulation, when moisture and inorganic nutrients were supplied as suitable growth conditions. In summary, the process proposed here takes advantage of autochthonous microorganism metabolic activity and CR bulking properties to efficiently degrade diesel hydrocarbons. This system is inexpensive, efficient, and environmentally compatible and may offer a viable choice for diesel-contaminated soil remediation. However, further studies are necessary to characterize system response to natural conditions before scaling it up to the field." @default.
