- W2000280733 abstract "Charge transfer is a fundamental and fascinating three-body process with many and varied applications whether in man-made tokamaks or in the naturally occurring phenomena throughout the universe, including the upper atmosphere, interstellar clouds, and astrophysical plasmas. It concerns the transfer of one or more electrons between two colliding heavy particles. This chapter reviews some of the principal theoretical models and assumes that each heavy particle is an ion or an atom, that the impact energy is nonrelativisitic, and that the electron is confined to outer shells. The chapter focuses on two principal aspects of charge transfer: (1) the choice of optimized basis set, depending on energy—for example, perturbed stationary states or continuum distorted waves and(2) the identification and description of nonadiabatic couplings between these basic functions, whether crossing, noncrossing, rotational, or whatever. The chapter demonstrates the power of the Stueckelberg phase integral method, suitably reinforced by the parabolic or exponential model and the power of the traveling molecular (or atomic) orbital expansion." @default.
