• W2000284069 abstract "Abstract The kinetics of oxidation of Se(IV) by Ce(IV) was studied spectrophotometrically at 50°C in aqueous perchloric acid medium. In the absence of Ce(III), which retards the reaction considerably, the reaction was first order with respect to Ce(IV) and fractional order with respect to Se(IV). However, in the presence of added Ce(III), the order with respect to Ce(IV) was found to lie between 1 and 2. Ionic strength was found to have negligible effect on the rate of the reaction, but increase in [H+] resulted in a slight decrease in rate. The reaction was observed to proceed through the formation of a 1:1 complex between Ce(IV) and Se(IV), the rate corresponding to the expression. − d[Ce(IV)] dt = 2 k 1 k 3 K[Ce(IV)] 2 [Se(IV)] { K 2 [Ce(III)]+ k 3 [Ce(IV)]}{1+K[Se(IV)]} Ea, ΔH≠ and ΔG323≠ for the reaction were found to be 23.5 kcal mol−1, 23.0 kcal mol−1, −9.0 cal mol−1 degree−1 and 25.9 kcal mol−1 respectively. The values of K, k1 and k3/k2 calculated from the kinetic data were found to be 127 (spectrophotometric value: 105), 3.3 × 10−4 sec−1 and 2.0 respectively." @default.
