- W2000297855 abstract "In a number of plant families, various species bear on their leaves numerous peltate hairs secreting lipophilic substances (essential oils, resins, etc.). Peltate hairs are usually composed of a foot (unicellular), a stalk (unicellular), and a head (multicellular). In the head, biosynthesis and secretion of the lipophilic material take place. Head cells, when active in secretion, possess thickly arranged ribosomes and many mitochondria and plastids, whereas other organelles (dictyosomes, ER-elements, etc.) occur in small numbers. At the stage of senescence, head cells appear lysed (including dark “foamy” protoplasm, cell plasmolysis, folding of the cell walls, disorganization of organelles and membranes). Available reports on senescent peltate hairs indicate that the peltate hairs do not retain their integrity. Thus, when the head degenerates, it separates from the stalk and falls down, or the head along with the stalk degenerates and drops or the entire hair shrinks and falls. In Origanum dictamnus, during peltate hair senescence, the head and the stalk degenerate, whereas the foot remains living. However, no separation (and subsequent falling) of the head or the head and stalk has been observed." @default.
