• W2000338999 abstract "A knowledge of oil cracking kinetics is necessary in oil exploration for basin modelling as well as in oil production for application of the thermal methods of enhanced oil recovery. We present here a kinetic model which describes the changes in the composition of oil together with the subsequent formation of gas and coke as a result of the thermal cracking. The petroleum is represented by four fractions (methane, C2–C5, C6–C13, C13 +) whereas coke formation is also accounted for. The cracking of each liquid fraction is described by a balanced elementary reaction governed by first order kinetics and obeying Arrhenius law. For a given oil, the kinetic parameters of the model are optimized with reference to a dataset comprimising the final compositions resulting from oil pyrolysis experiments in gold cells under pressures in excess of 10 MPa. This optimization method has been applied to two examples, the first one related to aromatic oil (Boscan) and the second one to a paraffinic oil (Pematang). About 50 pyrolyses were used, with a large range of heating times (10 min to 14 days) and temperatures (335–540°C). The model accounts satisfactorily for the specific kinetics of cracking of each oil, namely a greater amount of coke and a lesser proportion of gas and condensate for the aromatic as opposed to the paraffinic oil. The wide temperature range in which the model is valid supports its extrapolation to the temperature range of sedimentary basins.
