- W2000352912 abstract "The relaxation of constraints in nonequiaxed grains, which is the basis of a new theory of polycrystal deformation, permits the development of strain heterogeneities on a grain scale. Shear bands are then expected to form, even in the presence of local strain hardening, when there is sufficient textural softening. This was evaluated for an idealized rolling process, in which shears in the transverse plane were allowed. The result is that grain-scale shear bands should form and should be inclined to the rolling direction preferentially at angles of 23° and 37°. While the latter are expected to occur less frequently at the beginning, they are most easily transferred from grain to grain and should give rise to colonies of ±37° shear bands in a herringbone pattern, as has been frequently observed. Finally, an analysis of the degree of textural softening incurred by sample-scale shear bands as a function of hypothetical angles (which are allowed because of a sharp nose in the polycrystal yield surface at that point) indicates that such shear bands should occur preferentially at ±45°." @default.
