- W2000361628 abstract "Serious consideration is being given to the design and planning of manned exploration missions to Mars in the 1980's. In considering the entry and landing phases of the mission, there is a choice between propulsive retrobraking and aerobraking within the Martian atmosphere to successively reduce velocity from the hyperbolic excess levels of the interplanetary transit phase required to ultimately bring the vehicle to rest on the surface. weight trade-offs favor selection of the aerobraking mode, the effect of uncertainties in the atmospheric characteristics on the feasibility of performing the aer obraking maneuver must be evaluated further. The aero - and retro - braking modes have been com pared on a systems basis, and the functional require ments (e. g., entry guidance, corridor depth, heating, communications, terminal retardation and landing, configuration selection, etc. ) for entry and landing on Mars have been considered for the most recent atmospheres derived from Mariner IV data, as well as other postulated atmospheres. Although the entry window has been pinched further by the new, lowdensity atmospheres, the aerobraking mode still appears feasible. Although system" @default.
