- W2000371510 abstract "To the Editor: We read with great interest the article by Dr Xu and colleagues ( 1 Xu Z. Ellis S. Lee C.C. et al. Silent corticotroph adenomas after stereotactic radiosurgery: A case-control study. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys. 2014; 90: 903-910 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (35) Google Scholar ). The authors reported on a case-control study of silent corticotroph adenomas (SCAs) after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). They concluded that silent corticotroph adenomas show a more aggressive course with a higher progression rate than do other subtypes of nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas (NFAs). The authors are commended for reporting this novel discovery in NFA treatment to the worldwide readership of this journal. Silent Corticotroph Adenomas After Stereotactic Radiosurgery: A Case–Control StudyInternational Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, PhysicsVol. 90Issue 4PreviewTo investigate the safety and effectiveness of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with a silent corticotroph adenoma (SCA) compared with patients with other subtypes of non–adrenocorticotropic hormone staining nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma (NFA). Full-Text PDF In Reply to Chen and ChungInternational Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, PhysicsVol. 91Issue 5PreviewTo the Editor: We are grateful for the interest that Drs Chen and Chung have in our recent publication (1, 2). The silent corticotroph adenoma is considered a rare subtype of nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma. Chen and Chung's group used propensity-score matching to identify a matched group of non-adrenocorticotropic hormone staining nonfunctioning adenoma. No difference in progression-free survival was found between the 2 cohorts from their institution. In our clinical experience, with the improvement of immunohistochemical testing, more and more patients with silent staining adenomas are being characterized as compared with a completely null cell adenoma.
