The infection contributed to the death of one, nearly killed the second, and led to hospitalization in a foreign country for the third. All of the uninfected tourists and none of those infected were taking prophylaxis. Two of those who developed malaria had discussed chemoprophylaxis with their physicians and decided against chloroquine because of possible toxicity and eye damage.
