- W2000387539 abstract "Fractures of the second through fifth metacarpals are some of the most common fractures of the skeletal system. Thetreatment of these fractures has evolved over the past 50 years, from treatment with a roller bandage with little reduction to a thorough understanding of the various fracture patterns and necessary treatment regimens. The fracture patterns inherent to the metacarpals are based on their anatomic location and include base fractures, shaft fractures, neck fractures, and head fractures. The treatment regimens have evolved to include closed reduction and immobilization, percutaneous pin fixation, screw fixation, interosseous wiring, plate fixation, and external fixation. The decision making involved in the treatment of these fractures incorporates an approach based on. fracture location, inherent stability, associated soft tissue trauma, and the functional demands of the patient. Although many fractures can be managed conservatively based on this approach, this article focuses on the operative management of the irreducible or unstable fractures of the second through fifth metacarpals." @default.
