- W2000437768 abstract "The Chromatographic behavior of a group of 35 indole compounds has been studied. From a systematic study of solvents, mixtures of the lower alcohols with water were found to give the best general behavior and range of Rf's. The Rf's are strongly influenced by pH. The effects of water content, and of the alkyl radical in the alcohol, are described in detail. The most satisfactory all-round solvent was isopropyl alcohol 8, 28 % aqueous ammonia 1, water 1. A list is given of the Rf's of all the compounds with this solvent and their color reactions with several reagents. The method was utilized to confirm that Avena coleoptiles convert indoleacetonitrile to indoleacetic acid. Sweet corn (var. Country Gentleman) contains indolepyruvic acid in addition to indoleacetic acid. It also contains two other indole compounds having plant growth-promoting activity; though these could not be identified, they apparently differ from all the other compounds studied. The indolepyruvic acid in corn is not a bacterial product. Evidence is summarized which suggests that it may be widely distributed in plant tissues." @default.
