- W2000440471 abstract "It is the widespread opinion that the radiation induced change of polymer properties depends only on the total absorbed dose. However, this is true only for irradiations carried out under exclusion of oxygen. This means in practice high dose rates in air and thick samples. If the irradiation is carried out at low dose rates in air, the effects are strongly dependend on the dose rate. In case of thermoplastics the radiation stability at low dose rates may be only 1 to 10 % of the stability measured at high dose rates. Also the “modern” polymers polyimide, polyaryl ether ether ketone and the like, show a strong influence of the dose rate. The deterioriation is qualitatively understood by diffusion processes and the slow breakdown of radiation built peroxides which leads to chain scission. The stability of thermosetting resins shows little dependence on the dose rate because of their extremely small diffusion coefficients for oxygen. In some cases special “after effects” are observed. This means that polymers slowly deteriorate during their storage in air after irradiation." @default.
