- W2000442604 abstract "ABSTRACT Regions are defined and divided by boundaries at which the parameters of systems change. Thus the ecological system changes dramatically when we go from the land to the sea. There are regions of time as well as of space, bounded by dates at which the parameters of a spatial region change. This is a familiar concept in the humanities, where “periods” of history, literature, art, architecture, etc. are widely recognized. The social sciences have been slow to recognize this problem, especially econometrics and statistics. When we cross over into a new region of time, however, the immediate past is usually a poor guide to the future, and we need to look for corresponding episodes in the more distant past. Some illustrations are given from the American economy." @default.
