- W2000452901 abstract "It would be hard to imagine anyone involved in the area of autism-whether as an educator, administrator, clinician, researcher, or family member-who is not aware of the controversy and debate that exists relating to the delivery of educational programs for young children with autism. For several years now, not a week has gone by without hearing about something or someone either fueling or attempting to extinguish this firelaw suits; plights of families pursuing funding for their choice of intervention; conferences for, against, or debating specific intervention models; and even internet battles. At the heart of this controversy seems to be an urgent need to demonstrate, or believe, that one particular model of educational intervention might be more effective and certain than the others. Perhaps some are willing to concede that we cannot, at least at this time, experimentally conclude effectiveness; but many feel compelled to at least demonstrate that one intervention might be more appropriate and more promising (for a variety of reasons). Perhaps one advantage to this controversy is that a certain level of competition has developed. Just as the lack of competition inherent in a commercial monopoly leads to poor service and little choice, we assume this can occur in educational services as well. Conversely, competition can lead to improved services. However, the potential negative outcomes of such competition can be equated to the dirty politics we have all witnessed around presidential campaigns. At this point, many of us have observed unprofessional or uncivil behavior, and a general disrespect or disregard for diverse thoughts. This type of environment does not produce competition, nor synergism. The mission of this special journal issue is to bring together a variety of perspectives and models in order to facilitate a healthy discussion among the many" @default.
