Most anxiety disorders are clearly genetically influenced. At least Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder apparently carry even a higher morbidity risk for family members than do affective or schizophrenic disorders. Twin studies have been confirmatory. Systematic adoption studies have not yet been carried out. For Generalized Anxiety a genetic background has not clearly been demonstrated, but a general anxiety proneness may very well be inherited. The prevalence of Panic Disorder is about two procent in the general population (highest in women) and is at least tenfold among firstdegree relatives of affected probands. A relation to mitral valve prolapse has been found, although of great variation in different studies. The two phenomena seem not to be quite genetically congruent.Depression and alcoholism are common among anxious patients, and this relation seems to a great extent to be biologic-genetic, although such afflictions may also occur as psychosocial complications. The genetic relation between depressive and anxiety disorders needs to be further investigated.More reliable genetic studies of homogeneous materials in the anxiety area have only been performed during the last few years. However, there is a great intensity in this research field." @default.
