- W2000469007 abstract "Abstract This article applies Stryker's identity theory ([1980] 2003) to the survey interview to examine the bias in self-reports of socially desirable behavior, using religious service attendance as an example case. An extended model, one that includes a novel intrapersonal level of commitment as an influence on identity importance, which, along with intensive and extensive interpersonal commitments, is posited to influence identity salience. The model is fitted to data from the 1998 General Social Survey (Davis and Smith). Findings suggest that the survey interview may be viewed by the respondent as an opportunity to exhibit a socially desirable identity by claiming more frequent or more recent behavior, regardless of the level of inter- or intrapersonal commitments. A path for this systematic error is discussed through the respondent's level of identity importance. Venues for future work are addressed." @default.
