This method is both simpler and gentler than prolonged ultracentrifugation at increased serum densities, the method generally employed for this purpose. The phospholipid compositions of the lipoprotein fractions obtained with this procedure, nevertheless, were similar to those observed in the lipoprotein fractions prepared by ultracentrifugation despite the more drastic nature of the latter procedure. The pre-α-lipoprotein fiaction obtained by electrophoresis on agarose gel was similar to the fraction of D>1.21 obtained with the ultracentrifugation technique both with regard to content and composition of phospholipid, lysolecithin being a major component. This finding suggests that the lysolecithin-rich lipoprotein of the D>1.21 fraction is not an artifact of the ultracentrifugation method." @default.
