- W2000482711 abstract "Statement of the Problem: The invasion of bone in malignant tumors of the head and neck dictate surgical planning and need for adjuvant therapy. The gold standard for evaluation of bony involvement remains the traditional computer tomography (CT) with bony windows cut. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been widely utilized among head and neck surgeons due to its superiority in providing details of soft tissue involvement and has also been used to evaluate for marrow involvement. Both imaging modalities are not without weaknesses. There is no control of the quality of the image obtained especially in hospital settings that are not accustomed to evaluating for bony involvement. The MRI in addition is technique and patient sensitive. Many studies cannot simply be completed due to patients’ inability to stay still for the length of the procedure. Even small motion artifacts can significantly compromise the entire study." @default.
