- W2000496954 abstract "The chemisorption of CO on Cu(111) at low temperatures has been studied by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, LEED and surface potential measurements. The initial heat of adsorption of 50 kJ mole−1 is maintained up to frcase|1/3 coverage (corresponding to a sharp √3 × √3–30° LEED pattern) and then drops abruptly to 38 kJ mole−1. Both the SP and the IR peak absorption intensity reach maximum values at θ = 13. Further adsorption leads to a steadily decreasing SP, the formation of two further LEED structures and changes in the IR spectrum. The IR band shifts only 8 cm−1 downwards from its initial position of2078 cm−1 as θ rises from zero to 0.52, but infrared spectra of 12CO/13CO mixtures taken over the full range of coverages show that this small shift is the consequence of two much larger opposing shifts. No band corresponding to bridged CO was observed in the accessible range (above 1830 cm−1). The relationship of these results to the bonding of CO on the IB metals is discussed." @default.
