On the Lewis Acidity of Nickel(0), IV. On the Reaction of Tris(ethene)nickel(0) with Alkali Metal Hydridotrialkylaluminates, -gallates, and -borates at −78°C Ni(C2H4)3 reacts with alkali metal hydridoaluminates and -gallates in ether/THF or ether/amine mixtures as solvents at temperatures below −70°C to produce the temperature-sensitive compounds [MA(n-Donor)n]+[R3Al/GaHNi(C2H4)2]− (1–7) (MA = Li, Na; R = Me, Et, iBu). When ethene in these 16-electron complexes is replaced by CO to form an 18-electron complex, the AlH and GaH bonds become so weak that trialkylaluminium and trialkylgallium are liberated. The reaction product is [Na(THF)4]+[HNi(CO)3]− (13), which reacts with TMEDA at −50°C to form the binuclear complex [Na(TMEDA)2]+[HNi2(CO)6]− (14). The mononuclear complex 13 decomposes in solution on warning to produce [Na(THF)4]2]+[Ni6-(CO)12]2− (15). — The σ-donor strength of the hydridoaluminate anion and the hydride ion in nickel(0) complexes can be compared with that of other σ-donors by 13C NMR spectroscopy. Trialkylaluminium or -gallium are liberated since the acceptor strength of Ni(CO)3 is greater than that of Ni(C2H4)2." @default.
