In the laboratory, we investigated silt-clay fabrics which were obtained by mixing a silt fraction with either air-dried clay forming clayey aggregates or wet clay as a paste. The results from scanning electron microscopy and porosity analysis were used to study the formation of fragipans. Our results suggest that fragipans originate from successive wetting and drying cycles. Each wetting period would favour the dispersion of clay particles within the soil matrix and each drying period would favour its reorganization into coatings over the skeleton grains and wall-shaped bridges between these grains. The prevalence of these processes makes possible the formation of fragipans under varied climatic conditions. De très nombreuses études ont concerné la caractérisation d'horizons de type fragipan dans les sols, mais leur origine est encore discutée. Dans cette note, nous avons étudié des assemblages argile-limon obtenusen mélangeant des grains de limon avec une phase argile, sous la forme soit d'agrégats séches à l'air, soil d'une pâte saturée d'eau. Les observations en microscopie électronique à balayage et l'étude de la porosité permettent de discuter l'origine des fragipans. Les fragipans se formeraient lors de cycles humectation-dessiccation, chaque période d'humectation favorisant la dispersion des particules d'argile et chaque dessiccation leur réorganisation, sous la forme de revêtements sur les grains du squelette et de cloisons argileuses dans la porosité inter-grains. L'importance de ces processus explique que des fragipans puissent s'être formés dans des contextes climatiques très différents." @default.
