- W2000516698 abstract "Evidence suggests that women's understanding of the anatomy and physiology of female reproductive tract is poorer than expected. We investigated various factors that have possible impact on women's knowledge and the emotional value of the reproductive organs. Anonymous survey. 32 question survey was completed by 195 patients from February-April 2013 (of which 101 were surveyed at the resident clinic, and 94 in private outpatient setting). Survey was comprised of 8 demographic, 10 female reproductive tract terminology, anatomy and physiology questions and 10 questions evaluating association between reproductive organs and female sexuality, femininity and emotional value. Chi-square and Fisher exact tests were used. Differences between 2 age matched groups (64 women with high school diploma or less (HS) and 131 with college degree or more (CD)) were analyzed. Patients in HS group had poorer understanding of the physiology than the CD group (71% vs 41% patients thought that uterus produces estrogen and progesterone, P=0.001). As far as anatomy, the number of incorrect answers was similar between the two groups (65 vs. 62% p=0.8). More than 50% of patients in both groups did not know that a premenopausal woman will stop having her periods if the uterus and cervix were surgically removed. In both groups the uterus was more commonly associated with sexuality and femininity than the ovaries (61 vs 64%, p=0.4) and it's removal appeared more detrimental. There were also no differences in understanding of the anatomy and physiology between private and clinic patients (56 vs. 59% incorrect answers, P=0.7). Age, educational level and care provider (attending physicians vs. residents) do not affect neither women's understanding of the basic anatomy of female reproductive organs nor their perception of impact of these organs on female sexuality and femininity, which are drastically lower than we expect. Further research needs to focus on creating more comprehensive counseling." @default.
