- W2000522152 abstract "On the basis of the attenuator model presented by Oxender, Zurawski & Yanofsky (1979) the regulation of transcription termination at a tryptophan attenuator is studied theoretically. In order to investigate the response of the attenuation mechanism to starvation for a particular amino acid, the probability of read-through transcription beyond the attenuation site is calculated. The results show that tryptophan or arginine starvation relieves transcription termination at the tryptophan attenuator while starvation for another amino acid existing in the tryptophan leader peptide does not affect the read-through probability. This agrees with the results obtained experimentally and confirms the attenuator model presented by Oxender et al. The read-through probability is also calculated under the condition that cells are starved of all amino acids simultaneously. The results indicate that the tryptbphan attenuation mechanism is able to respond to this starvation as well as to starvation for tryptophan alone." @default.
