- W2000543679 abstract "2054 While bone density (BMD) has been well characterized in the Asian race, comparisons between the various ethnicities of Asia are not as common. PURPOSE: To examine the differences in BMD among three Asian ethnic groups, and the variables that predict those differences. METHODS: Thirty-three premenopausal women were recruited from Asian communities in Southern California (13 Korean, 11 Japanese, 9 Chinese). Subjects were tested for BMD, body composition, anthropometrics, leg strength and power, and aerobic fitness. Questionnaires were used to determine physical activity (PA) levels, health and lifestyle history, and menstrual history. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and multiple regression (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The Japanese group was younger (35.6 ± 5.0 vs. 39.1 ± 6.2 and 41.1 ± 4.7 yrs, respectively) and more aerobically fit (39.8 ± 5.4 vs. 33.1 ± 4.5 vs. 33.2 ± 5.0 ml.−1kg. −1min, respectively) than the Chinese and Korean groups. No group differences were noted in anthropometrics, body composition, or BMD. However, the Japanese tended to be lower at all BMD sites measured (Japanese, Korean and Chinese, respectively: Spine BMD 1.007 ± 0.096 vs. 1.014 ± 0.090 vs. 1.033 ± 0.138 g/cm2; Hip BMD 0.820 ± 0.103 vs. 0.906 ± 0.112 vs. 0.881 ± 0.132 g/cm2; Heel BMD 0.437 ± 0.288 vs. 0.501 ± 0.085 vs. 0.518 ± 0.099 g/cm2), and were osteopenic at the hip according to mean t-score (−1.07 ± 0.88). For all groups, body weight and lean body mass were significant predictors of BMD, explaining between 16–25% of the variance in BMD. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that BMD, and the factors that explain BMD, may be similar among the various ethnicities of Asia. Supported by NIH Grant S06 GM 8101–28" @default.
