- W2000577115 abstract "PURPOSE: About 60% of college students are sedentary, greater levels of physical activity (PA) are associated with improved mental and physical health. Therefore, we examined if Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), a behavioral intervention designed to produce rapid internally motivated change, and Contingency Management (CM), a behavioral intervention that provides tangible reinforcers for completion of target behaviors, were effective in improving PA levels among heavy drinking, college students. METHODS: We randomized 30 sedentary heavy drinking college students (23 women, 7 men) into one of two conditions: (a) 50-min MET session focused on increasing PA with a plan to start a exercise program (n=16) (MET), or (b) 50-min MET session focused on increasing PA and 8 wk of CM sessions that included PA contracting and provision of reinforcement for verified PA (n=14) (MET+CM). Participant's height and weight were measured and body mass index (BMI) calculated. Participants wore an omnidirectional accelerometer for four days at baseline and 8 wk to assess habitual PA. Paired t-tests were used to examine differences among total accumulated time spent (%) in sedentary, and light, moderate, and vigorous intensity activity at baseline and 8 wk. PA data are reported as % time spent at a given intensity (+SEM). RESULTS: Participants were 20.6±1.7y with a BMI of 24.8±4.3kg/m2. At baseline, there was a trend for MET participants to spend less time in sedentary activities (68.2±9.2%) than MET+CM participants (72.9 ± 9.2%) (p=0.09). After 8 wk both groups showed non-significant increases in time spent in sedentary activities: MET+CM (1.9±9.2%) (p=0.08) and MET (3.2±9.2%) (p=0.09); but these changes did not differ between the groups over time (p= 0.13). Further, no significant differences were noted between the groups in terms time spent in light, moderate, and vigorous intensity PA (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: In this small sample of college students, neither MET nor MET+CM resulted in changes in PA. A small sample size and relatively short accelerometer monitoring period may have contributed to the lack of beneficial effects noted. Supported by: NIH P60-AA-003510" @default.
